If your gums hurt and bleed you probably have plaque or tartar at the gum line causing irritation called gingivitis. This is the beginning of gum disease and calls for immediate attention. However, you could already be in a more advanced stage and may be suffering from periodontitis, a serious gum and jawbone disease.

When dental problems are suspected, many people often make the mistake of brushing harder and flossing more aggressively. This can be the cause of gum irritation or aggravate the condition further. The solution is often a simple in-office cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar.

If the gum problem has progressed, you may need a more extensive procedure to remove bacteria from between your teeth and gums so that your gums can heal. Then you will need to follow up with good oral hygiene.

Bleeding gums can also be caused by other health problems including:

· Blood disorders
· Leukemia
· Vitamin K deficiency
· Scurvy
· Hormonal changes
