"I need a crown? Why & how?"

Many us have large silver fillings from our childhood.  For many years these fillings were the standard of care in dentistry.  And they can last a long time !  But eventually those teeth need maintenance.  Fractures, leakage, and recurrent decay form.   Notice the section of this tooth pictured that looks grey - that is where it will break.  The key is restoring it before it breaks !  This tooth is diagnosed for a "Build-up and Crown".  A crown fits over the tooth, not in it.  The procedure goes as follows:

Initial visit-  Anesthesia is placed to numb the tooth (you are not put to sleep!).  The old silver is removed along with any decay and unsupported tooth structure.  The resulting space from this removal is replaced by the "Build-up" ( a white bonding material ).  Your tooth is then shaped to receive a crown.  An impression of the tooth is taken, and a temporary (plastic) crown is made and placed over your tooth.  You leave with the temporary crown until the next visit.  Between visits, our dental lab makes your new crown from the impression taken.

2nd visit-  No anesthesia is needed.  The temporary crown is removed and the porcelain crown is tried in and cemented into place over your tooth.  Your tooth is protected and looks better, too !

To see before and after pictures of crowns, look under our "Dental Procedures", sub menu "General Dentistry", sub menu "Crowns & Bridgework".
