A Word About Birth Control and Antibiotics.

here have been no large, long-range studies proving antibiotics cause interference with the effectiveness of birth control pills (one exception is the antibiotic Rifampin, which Dr. Tekin does not prescribe).
Nonetheless, researchers can't rule out the possibility that a small percentage of women may experience decreased effectiveness with the use of antibiotics. Additionally, new versions of the birth control pill in low-dose form may be more prone to decreased effectiveness.
Therefore, Dr. Tekin prefers to err on the side of caution and recommends barrier protection during the duration of your antibiotic prescription. "Better safe than sorry!"
