Inlays and Onlays FAQs

Inlays and Onlays in Georgia

hat are inlays/onlays?
Inlays/onlays are similar to fillings, but they are made from porcelain in a lab instead of being sculpted from cosmetic composite material in your tooth. They are created to fit precisely and perfectly match the color of your natural teeth. The end result is a seamless restoration, which actually strengthens your tooth. Inlays can be placed down between the cusps of your teeth and onlays cover the tip or tips.

Are there alternatives to inlay/onlays?
For very small holes and areas of decay, tooth-colored composite fillings are an option. If you have an area of decay too large for inlays/onlays, Dr. Tekin may recommend a porcelain crown instead. A crown covers your entire tooth, providing strength and protection, while preserving your natural tooth. Inlay/onlays allow you to keep more of your natural tooth than crowns.

Is the procedure painful?
No. We will fully anesthetize the area, before removing decay and damaged tooth material. For those who are nervous about dental work or resistant to numbing, we offer sedation dentistry. If you do experience mild discomfort after the procedure, over-the-counter pain relievers should take care of it.

Can I get inlays/onlays in one office visit?
No. You inlays/onlays will be made in a lab to perfectly match the color of your teeth and fit your prepared tooth. Before we can make that match, we must remove the decay and damaged material, to determine the precise size and shape of the area to be filled. We will use a temporary covering to protect your tooth between visits.
