hat happens during the neuromuscular treatment process?
There are several phases that may take place if you feel you have a TMJ disorder. First, a comprehensive dental evaluation will be done to find or rule out dental causes. Then, a diagnostic evaluation with special neuromuscular testing will be performed. After the problem is identified, Dr. Tekin and his team will put together a personalized treatment plan. Treatment may be as simple as jaw therapy (exercises), or may include orthotic appliances that are to be worn at home. Whatever your TMJ problem, we have many options to give you relief, starting with the least invasive options. Find out more about TMJ treatment during a personalized consultation.
Should I seek TMJ/TMD treatment now, or just wait it out?
For some patients with neuromuscular problems, minor symptoms may come and go, or disappear altogether. For others, however, a misaligned bite will only cause increasing problems if the condition is not treated. There is no way to know how severe your problem is, so it is better to come in and have your mouth evaluated in order to prevent serious symptoms and/or complications. As with any medical condition, you may save yourself a lot of pain and treatment fees by addressing the problem early.
What caused my TMJ/TMD?
The causes of a misaligned bite are not fully identified. Some instances may result from injury or trauma from auto accidents, sports injuries, or blows to the head. Factors including negative oral habits like tooth grinding, diseases like osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, and others may contribute to the condition. Sometimes, jaw range can also be affected by other medical procedures and/or scar tissue around the area. Dr. Tekin will perform extensive testing to find and correct the source of your jaw imbalance.
How do nightguards alleviate my symptoms?
If you are a nighttime tooth grinder, it may be causing some of your TMJ symptoms or exacerbating the problem. Symptoms like head tension to migraine headaches can arise from the stress grinding puts on the jaw muscles. Nightguards can protect teeth and keep upper and lower teeth from grinding together to cause tension and soreness. Nightguards are custom fit for your comfort, do not inhibit breathing, and can prevent long-term damage to teeth, gums and jaw joints. They are also a very inexpensive solution.
