Dental Implants

Atlanta, Georgia

f you're looking into dental implants to fill in missing teeth, you should be aware of the process. Keep in mind that dental implants are so effective because they are anchored into the jawbone. In order for the post to be implanted successfully, the dental implant procedure must be done in stages.

Dental implants are done on an outpatient basis, and patients are fully anesthetized during each visit. First, the titanium dental implant post is implanted surgically into a healthy area of bone. The gum area is then stitched up over the post. Once the post is in place, the area must be allowed to heal fully, and the post to fuse to the bone, before the next phase is completed. This usually takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months. During healing, a temporary tooth, bridge or denture will be placed to fill in the missing gap (depending on how many restorations are needed.)

Implanting the titanium post, the artificial root, is the first stage. The second stage is another surgery, but minor this time. The top of the post is exposed and a small abutment attached to it. It projects through the gums and will hold the porcelain tooth. The gums are closed up again around it and allowed to heal for a couple of weeks. The third and last stage is affixing the new tooth to the abutment. Now you have a gleaming new tooth with a sturdy new root that will last indefinitely, with good care.

Keep in mind that while most patients are good candidates for a dental implant, those with serious gum or jawbone deficiencies, osteoporosis, or uncontrolled diabetes may not be able to support a long-term implant. Schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation with Dr. Tekin to discuss your implant options.
