fter decay, injury or infection has compromised a natural tooth, a root canal may be performed in order to save the enamel. A root canal usually requires two visits and is done on an outpatient bases.

First, after the patient is anesthetized, the endodontist will remove the diseased or damaged tissue, or pulp, from the inside of the tooth to prevent any bacterial spreading or future infection. The dentist may use a rubber dam to isolate the tooth and protect neighboring teeth. The pulp cavity is then filled with a material called gutta percha so the tooth is not left hollow.

An impression of the tooth is taken in order to create a porcelain crown to fit atop your root canal tooth to enhance strength and protect it. You will most likely receive a temporary crown to wear while the new one is being fabricated. During your next appointment, your life-like porcelain crown is placed. Do not worry about the procedure being painful - you are numb for the whole thing, and the dentist will make sure you have a prescription painkiller if you should experience post-treatment discomfort.
