or patients who have dental anxiety, "sedation dentistry" or "sleep dentistry" may sound like the perfect solution. Here at Art of the Smile, we believe that sedation dentistry is the ideal way to deal with anxiety. You may have heard other dentists talk about sleep dentistry, a process similar to sedation dentistry but with a major difference you should be aware of.
Sleep dentistry refers to the method of performing dental procedures while a patient is under general anesthesia. Contrary to sedation dentistry, you are not conscious on any level during sleep dentistry. While some patients may actually prefer to be fully "under" or asleep the entire time, others are uncomfortable with the thought. Sleep dentistry is also more complicated - and has additional risks that sedation dentistry does not. In order to offer sleep dentistry, a certified anesthesiologist must administer the anesthesia - and your vital signs must be monitored constantly. In addition to being a more involved and potentially dangerous process, sleep dentistry is also a much more expensive option.
Sedation dentistry - the use of mild sedatives to reach a relaxed, conscious state during dental treatment. Also called "oral conscious sedation."
Sleep dentistry - the use of a heavy sedative to put dental patients completely asleep while they are monitored by an anesthesiologist.
At Art of the Smile, we prefer sedation dentistry because of the few risks involved. During sedation dentistry, you are still somewhat coherent and able to respond. We feel that it is important to have our patients involved in the treatment process and able to interact if needed.
If you are dealing with anxiety and still uncomfortable with the thought of oral conscious sedation, we offer an even more conservative option - laughing gas! Read more in our sedation dentistry section.
