TMJ - Neuromuscular Dentistry

Atlanta, Georgia

id you know the jaw joints are the most frequently used joints in the human body?

Temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are located on both sides of the face, just in front of the ears. They connect the jawbone to the skull and are responsible for carrying out jaw movements, including the opening and closing of the mouth, sliding movement and pivoting or rotation movements.

The TMJ is an important component of the mouth - it allows for all the motions your mouth goes through, including eating, speaking and chewing. The jaw joint can take wear and tear pretty hard - this joint actually takes the majority of pressure when you bite down! In the normal jaw, the cartilage between the jaw and skull cushions the components and provides "shock-resistance." When any of these areas (muscles, cartilage, joint, bone) are out of balance, the amazing amount of force that is exerted can have a negative impact on the bite.

For patients with TMJ/TMD or other neuromuscular problems, even the simplest acts of speaking can be difficult or painful. Our neuromuscular dentist has studied the function of the jaw joints for many years and knows how to help you achieve balance once again and avoid the unpleasant side effects of this condition.

The goal of TMJ treatment is to return harmony to these inner components of the jaw and to create an environment where the jaw joints can move freely with little friction.
